The Common Types of Roofing Materials

When it comes to renovating a house and replacing the roof, there are numerous choices out there. While most of the roofing materials will have no trouble keeping the rain out, the longevity and cost of each material vary drastically. That being said, here are the common types of roofing materials:

  • Metal Roofing

This is one of the most common types of roofing. It’s no longer limited to warehouses and can actually look amazingly stylish in any type of house. Metal is a fire-resistant material and does not attract any of the wood-boring insects that are renowned for attacking homes. Metal roofs are not the easiest to install and can be on the expensive side, but it is one of the most eco-friendly options to use on a roof.

  • Asphalt Shingles

Ideally known as composite shingles, asphalt shingles are one of the most common roofing materials out there. These tiles are usually made of a layer of fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and mineral granules. It is an all-purpose type of roofing material that is practical for most houses. Asphalt shingles are quite durable and most of them come with a warranty that lasts up to 30 years or even more. They are on the easy side when it comes to installation and are also easily sourced.

  • Slate Shingles

These are made of real stone and perhaps the most attractive in this list. This material is relatively easy to get and is easily cut into thin sheets. However, the installation of slate shingles is best left to a qualified professional as it can be hard and time-consuming to work with.

  • Rolled Roofing

This is a cost-effective and practical roofing choice for the outbuilding or comparable structures. Rolled roofing can also be used on low-slope roofs on residential houses. It’s one of the quickest methods that result to long-term roofing, but it is not the most appealing. It comes in rolls of about 100 sq feet and it’s very effective at stopping rain from going through.

  • Green Roof

This is an ideal option for those looking for more unorthodox or distinct type of roofing. This kind of roof is first installed with various layers of a waterproof membrane and a green substance is added later. A green roof can be used to grow plants, provide thermal insulation, absorb rainwater and put oxygen back into the air.

These are not the only roofing materials out there, but they are certainly the most popular. Check out roof restoration Sutherland Shire for more info.
