Nightmare Painting,
Painting of Nightmare Painting
May 4 – June 24, 2012
Opening: Friday, May 4th, 7-10pm
G Gallery is very pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Gordon Peterson.
Peterson makes highly inflected, intimately scaled, abstract paintings. The labour
evident in their surfaces speaks to a painstakingly considered development. They
appear to have come in to being through a process of slow and careful self-realization.
Viewing the works demands a similar dedication: mindful, unhurried, and focussed
visual attention.
In this show, entitled Nightmare Painting, Painting of Nightmare Painting, Peterson
enacts a sort of generational conflict. Each painting begins by self-consciously
removing and repositioning fragments and compositional strategies from earlier
works. The resulting connections between the paintings suggests a self-propagating
system wherein one painting spawns one or more others, genetically stamping
them—evoking a dream-like, uncanny recurrence.
A native of Winnipeg, Peterson has resided in Toronto for the last 7 years. He studied architecture at the University of Manitoba and currently works as a set designer in
the film industry. He has shown his work at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Plug In ICA,
Winnipeg, and The Khyber Centre for the Arts in Halifax. His work is held in public and
private collections including The Winnipeg Art Gallery, The Faculty of Architecture at
the University of Manitoba and the Province of Manitoba.
